TARGETjobs Careers Advice Weekly Roundup

Hello and welcome to our weekly careers advice round up. This is the place for you to find all the new advice we have written over the course of the week if you haven’t had time to check out our website or twitter feeds.

Let’s get straight into it by starting with how to write cover letters, CVs and application forms for graduate jobs at Savills.

And, to make your application stand out further, find out the skills and qualifications Savills looks for in new recruits.

Talking about what recruiters look for, find out what employers think of graduates with work experience. May make you re-think your holiday plans!

Going back to sector specific advice, wannabe accountants would benefit from knowing what kind of research to do before applying to accountancy firms.

And here are a few top tips for budding consultants on how to write a perfect consulting CV

If you are currently applying for 2014 graduate schemes find out which schemes have deadlines coming up next week.

Moving on to some internal announcements:

Entries to our Undergraduate ofthe Year Awards are now open! There are 10 awards up for grabs,
The Undergraduate of the Year award for Commercial Excellence, The IT & Computer Science Undergraduate of the Year Award, The Engineering Undergraduate of the Year Award, The Law Undergraduate of the Year Award, The Management Undergraduate of the Year Award, The Construction Engineering & Design Undergraduate of the Year Award, The Low Carbon Undergraduate of the Year Award, The Mathematics, Economics & Finance Undergraduate of the Year Award, The Female Undergraduate of the Year Award, and The Future Business Leader of the Year Award. All sponsored by top employers, offering internships, gadgets, trips abroad as more as prizes. Do you have what it takes to be a winner? Apply now.

Our second internal announcement is for Asian and Middle Eastern students studying in the UK wanting to return home to pursue their career.  We have an exciting new event taking place on Saturday 4 November in London. Here you will get the chance to meet employers from your country, find out how to write your CV to target employers in Asia and the Middle East, seminars and a chance to discover your further study options in Asia and the Middle East. TARGETjobs Weekly News Roundup

Hello and happy Friday,

It’s Harriet writing again to bring you the weekly summary of all the new content here at TARGETjobs online.

Firstly though, I was impressed to see that Alan has now reached £6256.52 from his initial £1 investment. You can follow Alan and his One Pound Challenge here.

But onto the job stuff…

Are you interested in a career in property? Many firms are now opening their graduate schemes, including property giant Cushman & Wakefield. If you’re making an application, check out what to expect from the application form and online tests, as well as our tips for answering Cushman & Wakefield’s application form questions.

You’ve probably heard of Teach First; the scheme to promote teaching as a desirable career start has proved incredibly popular with graduates. Aiming to replicate this success, new organisation Frontline has been launched to attract fresh talent into social work by using a similar model. If this appeals to you, read our advice on how to get hired by Frontline and why it isn’t a choice for the faint-hearted.

If you would prefer to make your impact on how the country is run, then it’s well worth spending some time learning about how to get a job with the Civil Service Fast Stream. You could find yourself helping to improve employment prospects and defending the country against natural disasters.

The Civil Service Fast Stream accepts a 2.2, but most employers in the finance sector require a 2.1 for entry onto their graduate programmes. If you didn’t make the grade, however, you should check out our updated guide to getting a finance, banking or insurance job with a 2.2, including how to explain any mitigating circumstances.

And finally, before I go (for good, as today is my last day here at TARGETjobs), remember to check out the deadlines for graduate jobs that are closing this week.

Have a great weekend – and a brilliant term at uni if, like me, that’s your next stop.

If you are specifically interested in retail management, we’ve got some great advice for you on how to show recruiters you’d be perfect for the role.

If you love the construction industry too and are interested in becoming a quantity surveyor, here are five application tips for you by a graduate quantity surveyor.
Talking of quantity surveying applications, make sure you know you know your consultancies from your contractors
And if you’ve been following us on Twitter @TjobsBuilding, you’ll see that we’ve been talking a lot about Open Doors, taking place on 27–28 September. If you are really interested in construction here are some reasons why you should tryto get involved.
Moving away from construction news:
-         If you are interested in retail banking or insurance but don’t have a numerical degree, don’t let this put you off. A non-numerical degree background appeals to employers.

And, as always, here are next week’s graduate jobs deadlines
One last thing: if you are following Alan Radbourne’s One Pound Challenge, you will be pleased to know that on week 13 he has achieved a total of £4027.46. If you want real-time updates from the man himself follow him on Twitter, or read his blog.

TARGETjobs News roundup

Hi, it’s Laura taking over the blog today. It’s that time of week again when we bring you the latest career news, job advice and deadlines.

This week at TARGETjobs we've been having a bit of a property burst. Before you apply to your chosen firms, be sure to read our advice on writing a property-specific CV. We've also got handy application form advice and essential interview tips to close the deal on your graduate property job.

We’re always advising you to show off your skills and achievements to their maximum potential, but if you’re the kind of person who feels uncomfortable at the very thought of that, we've had a brainstorm on how to sell yourself if you’re a shy job hunter. Make sure you read our key tips before sending off those applications.

Looking for the latest salary and job location info? We've summarised the results of the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) survey to give you an idea of where you might find employment and the salary you can expect when you graduate.

Have you been following the One Pound Challenge? Check out how Loughborough graduate Alan Radbourne has been getting on in his £1 business investment project.

TARGETjobs News roundup

Hello, this is Harriet (the TARGETjobs intern who is yet to write you a blog) filling in for Jackie to bring you up to date on all our brand new site content from the past week.

We had a root around different graduate schemes in retail to reveal how much you could make, with whom, and in which areas of work. The retail sector is more willing than many to provide this information so do make the most of it.

If retail’s not your thing, you might be interested in a great resource we discovered from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. CIPD’s HR Profession Map tells you all you need to know for embarking on a career in HR

And for any career, you’ll probably find it’s necessary to ‘manage ambiguity’.
‘Eh?’ I hear you ask. Fortunately, we also ran an article explaining how to develop and sell this important skill to employers. Find out how to show you’re able to handle risk and perform well in uncertain circumstances

Up now for a little longer than a week, but still as helpful as ever, is our advice on how to get the IT job you want. Just having a computer science degree isn’t quite going to cut it.

Remember: next week is an important one for all you aspiring solicitors as 31 July marks the closing date for graduate training contracts with law firms. These aren’t the only vacancies time is running short for though – make sure you don’t miss out on the graduate jobs closing next week

And before I go, time for your One Pound Challenge update. Recent Loughborough graduate Alan has been continuing his efforts to turn a £1 investment into a graduate salary in a year. He’s made it to £2503.47 already… looking good! You can follow his progress here

Have a great weekend!

TARGETjobs weekly news roundup

Hello, hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather. If you are taking a break from the sunshine then you’ve come to the right place to catch up on all the career advice we have been writing this week. But don’t worry  – it’s going to be a quick round up today so you can rush off back outdoors to top up your tan.

Let me start by asking you – have you ever had to fake it? From time to time you may not be feeling your usual confident self. Worry not! We are here to tell you how to fake it in crucial situations like interviews

Talking of interviews – have you ever had to do a video interview? Video interviewing is slowly making its way into the recruitment process for some employers.  To make sure you ace these interviews, read our pointers.

-          How graduate recruiters use video interviews
-          And expert performance tips for Skype and video interviews to really kick things up a notch

We also went a little female-focused this week as we found out that female STEM - that is, science, technology, engineering and maths - graduates are shunning city careers. Find out what they are doing instead.

And we refreshed a slightly older piece of career advice, which is still very relevant today. How can women turn their internship into a job and into a promotion? We were privileged to have Dr Sue Black, a senior research associate at UCL, amongst many things, talk at one of our events this year. Find out what she suggests you should be doing to ensure you progress in your career.

For those following Alan on his one pound challenge, his grand total this week is £1,760.04. See how a recent graduate from Loughborough University plans to turn a £1 investment into a graduate salary in one year. http://www.myonepoundchallenge.co.uk/

Lastly, they are going, going, gone! Check out which graduate jobs are closing next week

That’s all from me, hope you all enjoy your weekend... (ALERT: incoming motherly advice) stay cool, drink lots of water and apply that sun tan lotion J

TARGETjobs News roundup

Hello all, it’s finally Friday. This can only mean one thing; it’s time to update you with a brief summary of the latest news and career advice we wrote on our site this week.
But before we get started I want to draw your attention to Alan Radbourne, a 2013 Loughborough University graduate who has embarked on a year challenge: My OnePound Challenge. The aim of this challenge is to see how much can be made in a year with an initial £1 initial investment.

All profits made are reinvested and used to build a chain of small start ups. This has caught our eyes so much that we are going to be following him on his journey and every week update you on his profits and recent projects. Want to get up to speed? Check out his videos or follow on Twitter @Pound_Challenge or Facebook: One Pound Challenge
Back to business as usual:
This week we revealed which graduate careers are hotspots for jobs growth. If you are graduating in a few years or even this year, it’s worth checking these industries out, see if they are of interest and match your experience or skills accordingly.
In sector-specific news, we told you:
·         Which retail graduate employers accept graduates with a 2.2
·         Why your computer science degree won’t get you an IT job – beware there is more you need to do to be employable.
·         And in law we spent five minutes with Fiona Medlock, graduate recruitment manager at Mills & Reeve. She advises you on how to turn a good training contract application into an excellent one. She also has some encouraging words including:
“I read application forms from students who don’t have a 2.1 degree and 300 UCAS points – but they have to shine somewhere on the rest of the form if they are expecting a 2.2”
Speaking of helpful advice, if you are thinking of applying to the 2014 Undergraduate of the Year awards, make sure you have a read the 2013s winner and finalists blogs. They provide insightful tips on how best to apply and get yourselves prepared.  The Undergraduate of the Year awards give you a chance to win internships in a sector of your choice, to add something impressive to your CV and to network with recruiters. They’re well worth checking out – even if we do say so ourselves.
If you want to learn even more about what it’s like after you win an Undergraduate of the Year award, follow Ella’s blog. Ella is the winner of the Female Undergraduate of the Year award and every week she writes a blog on what she is learning and doing on her internship with Rolls-Royce (part of her prize for winning)
As always, I leave you with the latest graduate job deadlines closing soon. It’s now or never... so get applying!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and slap on the sunscreen; it’s meant to be a scorcher!

Please scroll down on our homepage to find the poll.

Going hand-in-hand with our poll, if you are considering, or have applied for a postgrad course, this is the perfect time to apply for one of our £2,000 bursaries. There are five up for grabs. But hurry applications close on Sunday. (30 June).

When it comes to interviews it’s always best to have examples set aside for these types of tricky questions. Have a look at the possible responses we have come up so you pass with flying colours.

As well as general interview advice, we talked to financial services employers. They told us they look for client skills as well as numeracy in their actuaries. Have a look at how to show recruiters you have the necessary people skills.

Welcome to this week’s graduate recruitment news roundup, where we summarise all our weekly career advice pieces in one easy read.

During this time you’ll be able to ask any questions you may have about the application process. For example, are you wondering:

-          What’s a good number of training contract applications to make?
-          Should you mention school achievements? Or should you focus on university experience?

There will be two live Q&As :

-          A video chat on Google hangout on Thursday 6 June at 3.00 pm.
-          The second will be a live Twitter Q&A where you can send your queries to @TjobsLaw using #lawchat and Julia will be there ready to advise.

Find out more info on how to get involved with the Google hangout and Twitter Q&A.

We complete this blog as always with our roundup of graduate jobs deadlines for next week.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend,
Jackie
